A Hilltopper's Journey
Shea Mahoney, a former Lady Hilltopper, dominated the court at Western Kentucky University from 1995 to 1999. Her impressive stats—over 1,000 career points and 600 rebounds—speak to her talent and dedication. But it's the environment at WKU that she credits for her success, particularly the challenging coaching style of Paul Sanderford and the tough competition she faced.
"All of that teaching and learning, the constant push to improve, definitely prepared me for the WNBA and overseas," Mahoney reflects.
From Basketball to CFO
After her collegiate career, Mahoney took her talents to the WNBA and then overseas, playing for teams like the New York Liberty and Phoenix Mercury. But it was Bowling Green, Kentucky, that always felt like home. Despite its size, Bowling Green offered a sense of community and familiarity that Mahoney cherished. The city's growth and development since her time at WKU only added to its appeal.
"Bowling Green has that hometown community feel, even though it's a larger town. I've always loved that about it," she says.
Lessons from the Hardwood
Mahoney's transition from basketball to her role as CFO at SKYPAC is a testament to the transferable skills she gained on the court. She emphasizes the team-first mentality she learned in sports and how it applies to her work today. The ability to collaborate, adapt, and work towards a common goal is a skill that transcends sports and is invaluable in any organization.
"I've found that the things I did in basketball have helped me here at SKYPAC. It's been shocking to me how comparable the two are, but it's really helped us do what's best for the organization," Mahoney explains.
